Innovating for a Global Palate Since 1971

Maharaja is one of Birmingham's most successful and prized restaurants, gaining a worldwide reputation for excellence since being established in 1971 by Mr.Batt. The name Maharaja means 'King of Kings' and is reflected by our passion to serve authentic North Indian cuisine that reflects the distinctive cooking styles and dining rituals of India's ancient nobility.

Authentic Cuisine

Maharaja is an Indian restaurant with a difference. We retain the traditional flavours that are so deeply revered, accentuating them with the highest quality ingredients. Each dish contains numerous spice combinations that truly reflect the depth of Indian cuisine. Moreover, the side dishes and condiments - chutneys, curries, daals, and Indian pickles - contribute to the overall flavour and textural contrast of the meal.

We still use the traditional charcoal cooking methods that bring out the delightful flavours to their most full, whereas most restaurants use cheaper gas-powered grills. We always train our chefs in the Maharaja way of cooking to maintain the genuine nature of our food.

Sophisticated Experience

Maharaja welcomes you to an evening of grace, refinement and congeniality with a treat for your palate. The soft lighting and mellow music provide an intimate and relaxed setting. A cozy dining space despite being in the busy heart of England's second city, you can gaze out along Hurst Street through the ground-floor picture windows.

Global Reputation

This attention to detail hasn't gone unnoticed over our 40 years, culminating in various awards including the Egon Ronay "Indian Restaurant of the Year" (1996) and Good Food Guide "Best in the Midlands" (1999).

Many famous names and celebrities have dined at the Maharaja, including former Prime Minister John Major, British music icons Cliff Richard and Andrew Lloyd Webber, Take That, Jasper Carrot, the England cricket team, cricket legends such as Wasim Akram and Kapil Dev, and snooker's Dennis Taylor and Willie Thorne.

Events & Catering

As well as the many outdoor charity events we have catered for, the Maharaja offers a catering service for all occasions both formal and informal. We have a team of specialists just for catering, providing full support and attention throughout the event.

Our experience in many of Britain's major events, concerts and shows means we have both the culinary expertise and technical capabilities to cater for most requirements.

“I have been going to the Maharaja for over 36 years now. In total that is something like 300 plus visits and I have NEVER had a bad meal. I always say the key to a good restaurant is consistency, that is just what you get with the Maharaja. I have travelled all over the world and the food at the Maharaja has never been surpassed. There is service to match and it does not cost the earth, what more can you ask from a first class culinary experience!”
— Jasper Carrott, Comedian
“Thank you very much for the delicious lunch you cooked for Norma and me. The wonderful meal has put Birmingham firmly on the map as the capital city of curry for both of us. We are very grateful to you and your staff for all your hard work.”
— John Major, Former Prime Minister
